Afrofuturism: Black Lives Will Exist in the Future

Afrofuturism: Black Lives Will Exist in the Future, is the third collaborative project between myself and Theresa May (and several others). It was made possible with a grant from the SPACES Urgent Art Fund. I provided principal photography and behind-the-scenes photography as well.

From the beginning of the piece which calls upon the ancestors with unaccompanied trumpet, to the middle section which dances in a groove to the beat of the African Diaspora, to the finale which ends in the spoken words “Black lives will exist in the future”, Afrofuturism elicits stories of Blackness and embodies May's personal style, creativity and aesthetic while highlighting Black women.

Yellow Is The Color of Sunrays

In almost every culture yellow represents sunshine, happiness, and warmth. An interesting mix of bubbly and threatening, the color yellow sparks a broad spectrum of emotions. While it can be playful and radiant, yellow can also be unforgiving and foreboding, which makes it a wildly fascinating hue. The many facets of the color yellow bespeak its incredibly impactful spirit.

Darius Garland for Dime Magazine

I was commissioned by Dime Magazine by Uproxx to photograph Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland a month prior to his first All Star selection. The shoot took place at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and North Coast Harbor.

Allen E. Cole for BLAX Museum

There has never been a shortage of exemplary black photographers in the world. Notable names that come to mind include Gordon Parks, James Vanderzee, Carrie Mae Weems and Ernest Withers among many others. However, one talented photographer who isn't quite a household name but still held in high regard is Allen E. Cole. This a small glimpse into his life.

This was the second collaborative project between myself and Theresa May for BLAX Museum. I chose to showcase the work of one of Cleveland’s unsung heroes. I wrote the script and curated the photos and Theresa composed the music.
